The parang motif which stems from the word pereng/lereng or diagonal slope, is considered one of the oldest and most prominent motifs in Indonesia.
In the past, the Parang batik was a prohibited motif worn exclusively by the royal courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta to distinguish one's degree of nobility and for different sacred ceremonies. Over time, there grew several variations of this prestigious design of repetitive serpentine stripes, ranging in different sizes from the delicate Parang Klitik to the bold Parang Barong.
