The Javanese believe that the truntum motif was created by Queen Kencana, wife of the Surakarta king Sunan Paku Buwana III.
Since the Queen felt neglected due to the King spending more time with his concubine, she started devoting herself to getting closer to God. One night before performing her prayers, she was mesmerised by the stars in the sky. This inspired her to create a batik motif of the stars to forget her sadness.
The king noticed his wife’s creation and was amazed by its perfection, reawakening his love for her. This makes the truntum a symbol of endearing and blossoming love.
